Course Description

The goal of this course is to teach students to read and translate the Sefer Torah with a high degree of comprehension. It is not an introduction to the Hebrew language in general. To the contrary, the course presumes that each student is already capable of reading Hebrew. This course acquaints students with the particular grammar, structure, and vocabulary that is used in Biblical Hebrew, which is somewhat different from modern spoken Hebrew. By the end of the course, each student will have an active vocabulary of several hundred words and will be capable of reading selected passages of the Torah—without vowels—and translate them from the original Hebrew into English. It is our expectation that you will continue with Biblical Hebrew II. At that point, you can continue on your own until you become a Ba’al Koreh(expert reader). This is a three-credit course. Students will spend two hours each week in class (or online) and one hour using the language lab software.
